 St. Louis County COVID-19 Update

The Department of Public Health has no comment on what comes next regarding the legal status of the public health order on masking.  However, we are very clear on the science and the recommendations and firmly stand by the urgency and necessity of increasing mask compliance in St. Louis County.
The CDC gave clear guidance yesterday in support of our core recommendations requiring masking in public venues for both the vaccinated and unvaccinated.  St. Louis County is in a state of high community transmission with a low vaccination percentage in comparison to the national average.  More than half of County residents and all children under 12 are unvaccinated and therefore deserve to have some protections in being exposed to the public.  Further, we have documented more than 600 breakthrough cases of vaccinated people who have tested positive for COVID-19 so far, and the total is likely higher
The CDC further affirmed yesterday that vaccinated individuals still spread the virus to other people.  We will all be safer conducting all engagements with other people with the protection of a mask.  It should be universal and consistent.
DPH believes that vaccination is the more effective method of resolving this pandemic and returning to normal.  We will remain firm on expressing our safety recommendations and work to include more data backing up our conclusions.   We additionally urge everyone in the County to immediately get vaccinated against COVID-19 if they have not already done so.
