St. Louis County COVID-19 Update

DPH Poised to administer COVID-19 Vaccine to Ages 5 to 11

On Friday, the FDA recommended approval of COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 5 to 11. The CDC is expected to make a final decision on the vaccine this week. Expanding eligibility will decrease community spread of COVID-19. In St. Louis County, community transmission is higher among children than other age groups. The average rate of new cases is highest among 5 to 9-year-olds, at 20.3 cases per 100,000 per day. The second highest rate of cases is among 10 to 14-year-olds.

Being able to provide the vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 will have a significant impact on slowing the virus. The vaccine has been tested among children in this age group and proven to be safe and effective. The St. Louis County Department of Public Health is working to be ready to start vaccinations for that age group after the CDC grants final approval. DPH will offer pediatric vaccines at all three of DPH’s permanent health centers and at four library branches. That includes holding evening hours twice a week at the South County Health Center in Sunset Hills and Saturday hours at John C. Murphy Health Center in Berkeley. DPH is also working with several pediatric care providers to supply their patients with vaccines, and the department will work with school districts to provide onsite vaccines for students.

Parents who have hesitation about getting their children vaccinated are encouraged to speak with their pediatricians about concerns and any lingering questions they may have about the vaccine. A patient services line is also available to support parents and guardians with questions about vaccinating their children. That number is: 314-615-7967. Once the vaccine is approved, details of vaccine events for the 5 to 11 age group will be posted on and shared on our social media sites.
