St. Louis County COVID-19 Update
New Report Available on COVID Infections in Long-Term Care Facilities

Sixty-three new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Saint Louis County long-term care facilities in August, according to a report from the Department of Public Health. This represents an increase from a low of 36 cases reported in March 2021, but a significant decrease from the numbers reported before vaccinations became available.

Long-term care facilities include nursing homes, assisted living centers, and other group care settings. The residents of these facilities tend to be at high risk of COVID-19 due to age, existing health conditions, and close living quarters. To date, long-term care residents account for 5.1 percent of infections reported in the county, but nearly half of all deaths from the disease.

Significant mitigation efforts, including vaccination and the use of personal protective equipment, have helped to slow the spread of disease in these facilities.
